Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions our customers ask before booking. For deeper detail, see the shipping guide.

How much does it cost to send a parcel from South Africa?

Cost depends on destination, actual weight and volumetric weight. Use the quote form above for instant rates to 248 destinations. As a guide, documents under 2 kg start from around R 350 to most major destinations; parcels under 5 kg start from around R 650 to the UK, US and Europe. Every quote includes customs documentation and door-to-door delivery.

How long does international delivery take?

Typical express transit times from Johannesburg: UK, US, Europe and Asia 3 to 5 business days. Australia 4 to 6 business days. African destinations 2 to 4 business days depending on customs at the receiving country. Times exclude customs holds, which can add 1 to 3 days for parcels of unusual content or high value.

Can I track my shipment online?

Yes. Every booking generates a unique waybill / tracking number. Enter it on the Track page on this site, or use it directly with our partner carrier portals. We email automatic updates at pickup, customs clearance and delivery. SMS updates available on request.

What is the difference between documents (ICD) and parcels (ICP)?

ICD (International Documents) is for flat paperwork up to 2 kg shipped in a flyer โ€” contracts, certified copies, deeds, academic records, visa documents.
ICP (International Parcels) is for everything else up to 23 kg per piece โ€” samples, spare parts, gifts, e-commerce returns, personal effects.

Who pays the import duties and taxes?

By default the recipient pays. Most international parcels ship under DAP (Delivered at Place), which means the consignee pays duty and VAT directly to the local clearing agent on arrival. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid, sender pays) is available on selected routes for an additional fee.

What can I not ship through Interdoc?

We cannot carry cash, perishable or temperature-sensitive food, live animals, firearms, narcotics, ivory or other CITES-restricted wildlife products, or undeclared dangerous goods. Most aerosols, perfumes and lithium batteries are dangerous goods even though they sit in a kitchen cupboard. See our Prohibited items and Dangerous goods guides for the full list.

What if my parcel is lost or damaged in transit?

Default carrier liability under the Montreal Convention is 22 SDR per kilogram (approximately R 560 per kg). For higher-value items, add declared-value cover at booking โ€” this raises the liability cap up to the declared amount. Lodge a claim within 14 days of delivery for damage, or within 9 months for loss, by emailing admin@interdoc.co.za with the waybill number.

Do I need a commercial invoice for an international parcel?

Yes โ€” every non-document international shipment needs one. The commercial invoice is the most important customs document: it shows what is in the parcel, what it is worth, and who pays the duty. Our quote engine builds the invoice for you using the data you enter at booking; you sign and attach it at pickup.
